Their entrance was different from the rest. When the doors to the studio for the photoshoot opened, they entered with such a pose that I don’t know if they had already practiced before. It was as if the popular internet webtoon ‘Fashion King’ had came to life.
The moment they entered the studio they were absorbed in checking their outfits and hairstyles. They were busy teasing and commenting on one another’s pose.
But they did not manage to play around much. When the filming started, they were so engrossed as though they have transformed to another person. Nervousness is not a word suitable to decscribe them.
This is TEEN TOP’s story. TEEN TOP is a 6 member group made up of C.A.P (real name Bang Minsoo 19), L.Joe (Lee Byunghun 18), Chunji (Lee Chanhee 18), Niel (real name Ahn Daniel 17), Ricky (Yoo Changhyun 16), Changjo (Choi Jonghyun 16)
TEEN TOP returned with their 2nd mini album [It’s] in January. They are the younger-guys with charismatic performances and masculinity, they told noona fans not to put on perfume. The title track ‘Crazy’ is a song that has an easy going melody and rap, showing off a variety of choreographed moves.
As idols in the music industry that welcomed spring in 2012, with their good looks, vocals and powerful performances, they have risen to become the new ‘in-trend-dols’ (in-trend + idols)

* TEEN TOP is about ‘perfectly synced dance’

Amongst the many idol groups, TEEN TOP is well known for their synced dance. In order to hear that ‘TEEN TOP is about their perfectly synced dance’ they spent 10 hours a day on practicing their choreography. As a result, they have earned the nickname of ‘perfectly synced dance idols’.
“We practise our choreography from 10 in the morning to 10 at night. Other than the time for school and vocal practise, we spend our time on practicing our choreography” (Ricky), “A charismatic performance is surprisingly easier. Like in the title track ‘Crazy’ we TEEN TOP were able to show what we have got, and that’s enough (to make the hardwork worthwhile). It’s the reason why we enjoyed the long practice hours.” (Chunji, Changjo)
The members who had the great desire to show a diverse performance and a perfect stage, they gave it their all to practise. Perfectly synced dance has become part of TEEN TOP’s daily routine.

* How is it like living as an idol singer? Is it fun?

“Now we know where all the cameras are positioned. It’s more fun as time passes. At first we didn’t know how to enjoy and we were in a rush to show what we have practiced, but now I think we’ve learnt how to enjoy it a little more. The sense of freedom we feel when we complete and get off the stage? Of course it can’t be expressed in words. (Niel, L.Joe)

* As compared to when you guys first debuted, what’s the biggest change?

“I think no matter what it’s the actions we do on stage, our expressions, the way we look into the camera. I feel that all the members are much better at this than before.” (C.A.P)

With the average age of 17, TEEN TOP is definitely different on stage and off stage. In their daily lives, they joke around just like many other students but when they stand on stage, there is a sudden change. They show confidence and passionate gestures on the diverse stage. ‘Ruler of elementary school kids’ aka the younger guys are attracting driving many women crazy regardless of age.

* When being called the ‘Ruler of elementary school kids’, can you feel your popularity? We heard that you have gained many noona fans as well?

“We’re still not really sure yet. When we meet our fans during our promotional activities, I feel really amazed and grateful. It feels great that our team members are gaining popularity in all age groups” (L.Joe)

* Is there a memorable fan?

“We strive to remember all the fans. There was this one fan who came the autograph session wearing a hanbok; she prepared a meal and asked us to marry her. I remember this Japanese fan who came dressed in Super Mario to ask for an autograph” (Niel, Chunji)
In a recent survey of 20 experts in the music industry, “Which idol will explode in popularity in 2012” and in the category of male idols, TEEN TOP came in 2nd. Popular composer cum producer Brave Brothers chose TEEN TOP as the rising stars in 2012.
“Their flawless synced dance and outstanding stage manners and performance leave great impression and knowing them in person, they are as kind and sincere, as much as their outstanding talents. So they are a team that I’ll look forward to even more in the future” (Brave Brothers)
TEEN TOP is a group that has been raised by SHINHWA member Andy. Andy is TEEN TOP’s strong supporter and teacher.
“Andy hyung taught as how all the members can stay together and told us to look for our individual specialties. We learnt that with strong friendship and teamwork we have to compensate on one others’ weaknesses. He has great experience as a singer so he personally taught as the know-hows of posing and the expressions on stage” (Ricky, Changjo)

As the interview carried on we had expected more joking sides of TEEN TOP. They were rather conscientious. When we asked them about their usual personalities, we received an unexpected reply, “You probably won’t believe this, but we’re all introverts. We don’t get close to people we just meet. So we only play amongst ourselves. But when we go on stage we change”

* A music genre that you would like to pursue? Who are your role models?

“We want to do style of music like Big Bang sunbaenim.” (Chunji). “Our role model is SHINHWA sunbaenim. We want to learn their perfectly synced dances and unchanging friendship.” (Ricky)
Lastly we asked them what was driving them crazy as they promote ‘Crazy’. The member who replied first was L.Joe. “It was the cuss word controversy. As compared to performing an entire song, the 4 words were even more difficult (지옥같아 like heck). The cuss word controversy happened because of the fast pronunciation of jiookkatta. Many people had heard it is a cuss word.
The remaining members, as though they had made a promise together, shouted in unison “We want to win 1st place so much we’re going crazy”. We could sense the burning desire in their eyes and voices. They said that as a singer, the goal and wish is the 1st place. Just like they really want to realize the wish, we’re watching when the TEEN TOP fans will be able to realize it as well.
